I found a contractor who is not state-licensed; can I use them? |
|
In short, NO. We have frequently encountered this scenario, which can cost you thousands of wasted dollars!
Why?
As of July 2008, a state licensed contractor is required under any of the following circumstances:
- When the job costs more than $2,500
- When the job requires labor in any of the following areas:
- Electrical
- HVAC
- Low Voltage
- Utility
- Plumbing
This means that you should never use someone that is not state licensed. Always verify the license with the Georgia Secretary of State. Click here to look up any state licensed contractor in Georiga
Using an unlicensed contractor puts you at extreme risk. Consider the following:
- Using an unlicensed contractor is actually illegal in the state of Georgia. You may be fined and prosecuted under criminal charges.
- You can jeopardize your insurance or the re-sale value of your home, not to mention your family's safety.
- If you have a problem or sued, you have no recourse, since an unlicensed contractor is not insured.
